The cocktail movement is in full swing and is showing no sign of slowing down.  What used to be the typical short list of offerings from your bartender at your favorite watering hole has now grown to full blown separate menus at times with more selections then the food menu.  Today’s drink lists are part of cocktail “programs” put together by “mixologists” using their sophisticated paletes and skill levels to not only bring classics to new heights but creating their own libations featuring house made syrups and using seasonal ingredients.

Italian restaurants in St. Louis are plentiful and run the gamut of styles from those serving the heavily sauced, cheese covered “classics” to those offering more authentic and refined, yet simple dishes focusing on the use of quality ingredients from specific regions of Italy.  Acero at 7266 Manchester Road in Maplewood is one of the later and their Executive Chef is Adam Gnau.  Acero has been one of my got to spots for years and is always on my recommendation list.  I have enjoyed many a great meal there and have some very special memories.  The food is always stellar, the service is attentive and informative, the atmosphere is comfortable fine dining, and nothing is overdone to the point of being intimidating or overly fussy.  I’m also a big fan of their tasting menu options including the $35 four course option or the chef’s seasonal grand tasting menu of seven courses starting at $75.  Don’t let the price tag scare you.  I promise you they are some of the best deals in town and never disappoint.  The grand tasting might not be for everyone but if you want a truly fun, and delicious evening I highly recommend letting Chef Adam and his staff create a dining experience for you that you will never forget.  It’s a type of meal I think any food lover should experience at least once in their life.  It’s an event.  A true sensory delight.

Comfort food.  A phrase that years ago would not be associated with skilled cooks and fine dining but now, elevated comfort food dishes like fried chicken and gourmet mac n cheese can be found across the country on menus put together by top chefs.  Now producing elevated comfort food can even get you a James Beard Award nomination for Rising Star just as it did this week’s guest Rick Lewis in 2014.

Like most chefs Bob Brazil is a busy man.  With a long list of culinary achievements already under his apron Bob is showing no signs of slowing down.  Seven months ago Bob and his partners opened Byrd & Barrel on South Jefferson just passed Cherokee.  It’s a gourmet chicken restaurant in a fast casual atmosphere with a great beer, whiskey, and bourbon selection behind the bar.  Featuring as much locally sourced ingredients as possible, they serve late and have a nice patio area and a drive through window.  Two months ago he became a partner in Tamm Avenue Grill in Dogtown.  As if that isn’t enough on his plate just this week he announced his latest venture with partners and Byrd chefs Ryan McDonald and Hana Chung along with Corey Smale of Strange Donuts, Good Fortune, a “Chinese Americanese” concept set to open in the Central West End this fall.  Extra sleep is not in his future.

I first met Bob and go to see his skills in the “kitchen” when we were on Mac’s BBQ team for the Travel Channel’s Underground BBQ Challenge.  We had a blast battling it out all day in a make shift space outdoors at The Civil Life until 1am in 18 degree weather.  It was a great bonding experience.  Helping a friend win $10,000 will do that.

Show 1 – Mac’s Local Buys

I am very happy to announce that Tony Loves Food will be coming to the airwaves on The Fan 590 AM, Saturdays from 1 – 2pm. Each week I’ll be joined by someone from the local food and beverage scene to share with you what they do. We’ll also talk about what’s happening around town, where you should eat, cover food events, share recipe ideas and cooking tips, have fun with the food game, and even give stuff away from time to time. My first guest this Saturday is my friend Chris “Mac” McKenzie of Mac’s Local Buys. Tune in on your radio, listen on line, or download the app.
