The gourmet toast trend that started a few years ago in cities like San Francisco and New York is alive and well in St. Louis at Milque Toast Bar and Colleen Clawson is very happy about that.  It may have had some people scratching their heads when diners were happily ordering up plates of toast for $5 to $10 but these aren’t your ordinary slices of simple bread and butter.  These plates are made up of thick slices of multigrain, rye, and sourdoughs, topped with everything from house made butters, cheeses, and syrups, to savory, hearty items like farm fresh egg salads, liverworts and kraut, crawfish remoulade, and gravlax.  We love bread and this is a very comforting, fun way to enjoy it.  Located at 2212 South Jefferson in the McKinley Heights neighborhood, Milque Toast fits right in with the mix of artists, cultures, and businesses that are helping to revitalize the area.  They try to use as many local ingredients as possible and change their offering regularly.  The menu is made up of a variety of toasts from sweet to savory, simple to exotic, with soups, seasonal veggies, salad, coffee, and a selection of milks and coffees.  They even have house made soft drinks.  Milquetoast may have a definition of a meek, timid, or unassertive person which stems from it’s origin from a 1920’s comic strip character but that doesn’t fit Milque Toast Bar.  The space and flavors are fun and bold with lots going on.

Show 7 – Liz Schuster of Tenacious Eats

Movies and food.  Two things that stimulate our senses and emotions.  Maybe that’s why we like to put them together.  This week’s guest Chef Liz Schuster is doing just that with Tenacious Eats.  Together with her partner Chef Steve Schmidt, Tenacious Eats presents a unique culinary and movie watching experience where guests enjoy a five course meal with drinks themed around the movie they get to watch as the meal is prepared and served.  There is live music beforehand, giveaways, some commentary during the show as to what Chef Liz is cooking, and even surprises along the way.  It’s a true interactive dining experience.  The movies are typically classics that most are familiar with and range from food themed movies like Big Night, romantic comedies like When Harry Met Sally, and even horrors like the Vincent Price feature, Theatre of Blood.

In case you haven’t heard, craft beer is booming.  Over the last handful of years that boom has lead to an explosion of new breweries in the St. Louis and surrounding area with over 40 now in operation.  One of the standouts is The Civil Life Brewing Company at 3714 Holt Avenue in the Tower Grove South area.  Owned and operated by Jake Hafner with Dylan Mosley as the head brewer, patrons of The Civil Life will find a laid back tasting room with a great atmosphere that can be enjoyed by families too.  There are two areas inside, one upstairs with a view of the lower bar, bar games, and an extensive outdoor seating area complete with walk up windows for ordering.  They have a sizable list
of sessional beers that regularly rotates through various styles and seasonal offerings.  You can also find their products in many bars and restaurants around town and the list is always growing.  They are open every day except Monday and are cash only but do have an ATM on site.

The cocktail movement is in full swing and is showing no sign of slowing down.  What used to be the typical short list of offerings from your bartender at your favorite watering hole has now grown to full blown separate menus at times with more selections then the food menu.  Today’s drink lists are part of cocktail “programs” put together by “mixologists” using their sophisticated paletes and skill levels to not only bring classics to new heights but creating their own libations featuring house made syrups and using seasonal ingredients.

Italian restaurants in St. Louis are plentiful and run the gamut of styles from those serving the heavily sauced, cheese covered “classics” to those offering more authentic and refined, yet simple dishes focusing on the use of quality ingredients from specific regions of Italy.  Acero at 7266 Manchester Road in Maplewood is one of the later and their Executive Chef is Adam Gnau.  Acero has been one of my got to spots for years and is always on my recommendation list.  I have enjoyed many a great meal there and have some very special memories.  The food is always stellar, the service is attentive and informative, the atmosphere is comfortable fine dining, and nothing is overdone to the point of being intimidating or overly fussy.  I’m also a big fan of their tasting menu options including the $35 four course option or the chef’s seasonal grand tasting menu of seven courses starting at $75.  Don’t let the price tag scare you.  I promise you they are some of the best deals in town and never disappoint.  The grand tasting might not be for everyone but if you want a truly fun, and delicious evening I highly recommend letting Chef Adam and his staff create a dining experience for you that you will never forget.  It’s a type of meal I think any food lover should experience at least once in their life.  It’s an event.  A true sensory delight.
